Grassroots Livelihoods Strengthened through the Next Level Grant Facility

After years of advocacy, Lamu Women Alliance (LAWA) and the community of Lamu are now taking their climate justice efforts to the next level, focusing on livelihood-based solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate change. This new shift was made possible through funding from the Next Level Grant Facility (NLGF) by the Voices for Just Climate Action (VCA) programme, with LAWA recommending six active community groups for support.

Over the past four years (2021–2025), Humanis, through the Voices for Just Climate Action (VCA) programme, has worked alongside civil society partners, particularly in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, to strengthen local voices in addressing the climate crisis. The Cost of a Blackout

The LAWA team visited Faza as part of the “Building Climate Futures in Lamu” project to explore how climate-related challenges are affecting everyday people, especially women, and how communities can adapt, thrive, and build resilience in the face of such threats. What we found was a story both inspiring and painful—a story of survival against all odds, and of progress that stalls with every blackout.

Illustrations by Melan, Mount Lewotobi, and Climate Change

Meilany Wungubelen's days in November and December 2024 were notably busy. She moved from one post to another, volunteering and assisting survivors of the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki. Along with her friends from the Coalition of Young People's Groups for Climate Change (KOPI), she became a storyteller for children and the elderly.

Aryani Newa’s Climate Action in Villages, Beaches, and Social Media

Aryani Newa Humba, a young leader from Mondu Village, East Sumba, is making a significant impact through environmental conservation and sustainable farming. As a Sunday School teacher, she educates children about climate change while leading regular beach clean-ups. She also chairs the Luri Panamu Farmers Group, encouraging alternative crops and traditional farming methods to adapt to changing weather conditions. Supported by Koppesda and the Adaptation Coalition, Aryani continues to inspire her community, proving that small, consistent actions can drive meaningful change.
