Quadrilingual dictionaries for the integration of border communities

WWF Paraguay supported the publication of the four-volume Quadrilingual Dictionary: Ayoreo - Spanish - Guaraní - Portuguese.

The first official presentation occurred in Paraguay’s capital, Asunción, at the National Congress and the second in the Ayoreo community centre in Nueva Esperanza, Carmelo Peralta, the main beneficiaries of the materials.

According to one of the authors of the dictionaries, this is the first time that translations from Ayoreo into Guarani and Portuguese were made available, and they are tools that the community has been longing for learning and communication.

The dictionaries are communication tools for the local people of the district of Carmelo Peralta in Alto Paraguay, Chaco and Porto Mortinho (Brazil). Four different cultures and languages converge in these areas, which will be strongly linked due to the imminent connection with the Brazilian territory through an international bridge to be inaugurated in 2025.

Both events were attended by national and international authorities, teachers, students and representatives of the Ayoreo community, who expressed their culture through traditional singing. These publications were declared of national, social, educational and cultural interest by the Permanent Commission of the National Congress and of linguistic interest by the Secretariat of Linguistic Policies of Paraguay.
