Voices of the Asmat

These are the voices of the Pomar Sirau Indigenous community, Asmat Regency, about the struggle to protect and recognise their customary territory rights and management space as an effort for a local nature-based solution through participatory mapping.

Asmat Regency is currently part of South Papua Province due to the new autonomous policy. The Pomar Sirau community is one of the communities in the Asmat region consisting of 7 villages, namely Erma, Sona, Sa, Er, Bu, Agani, Sauti.

The community’s concern for forests, rivers, swamps, animals and ecosystems, encourages the commitment and good practices of Indigenous communities to protect, maintain, and preserve natural resources and environmental services in the customary area of the community that have been passed down from generation to generation so that they can be managed sustainably for future generations. Mapping carried out by Indigenous communities is a wise solution for resilience to climate change.

This Senandung video from Asmat is supported by the Asmat District Government, WWF ID, SSN, SDI, HIVOS, Alfons Suwada Foundation, BRWA, LMAA (Asmat Indigenous Community Institution), and Indigenous Peoples through the Voices for just Climate Action (VCA) programme funded by MoFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs)/Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands through WWF NL.
