Commemorating World Consumer Rights Day in 2023
World Consumer Rights Day is an annual global event commemorated to promote consumer protection and increase global awareness of consumer rights. It also serves to raise awareness of market inequalities at the global, regional, national, and sub-national levels.
In March 2023, CUTS under the VCA in Homabay County coordinated stakeholders to commemorate this day under the theme “Empowering Consumers through Clean Energy Transitions”.
This event which focusses on access to energy products and services is such a critical component towards driving realisation of sustainable development in different democracies across the world of course with sharp focus on the vulnerable communities given low economic ability and power to acquire modern energy products leaving the majority to resort to use other cooking and lighting products (unclean sources of energy). Overuse of non-clean energy sources has led to an increase in disease burden among vulnerable households, thus predisposing them further to face other vulnerabilities.
Against this background, CUTS undertook this engagement in Homa Bay County. In this video, consumers are urged to reuse and recycle items to protect the environment.
