Women Federation Climate Advocacy to Policy Makers in Indonesia Sanitation Summit

The government of Indonesia, through the Association of Cities and Districts Concern on Sanitation (Asosiasi Kota Kabupaten Peduli Sanitati, AKKOPSI) held the 21st National City Sanitation Summit (CSS XXI) in Soreang, District Bandung, Province Jawa Barat, on June 14th-16th, 2023.
As Indonesia’s national event, CSS plays a significant role to exchange knowledge and experience in sanitation provision, build partnerships, encourage advocacy, promotion and campaigns, and influence government policy and budgeting as well, include leverages sanitation development towards Indonesia 2045 Vision.
Through this national event, CSS XXI seeks to build awareness among the community, government and relevant stakeholders to build commitment and consistency in providing safe sanitation for all. CSS participants are all regional leaders, Major (Walikota) and Head of District (Bupati) members of AKKOPSI, representatives of the Ministries, sanitation development partners, non-governmental organisations, private sector and academics. More than 100 districts/cities across Indonesia participated in this event.
SPEAK Indonesia and Indonesia WASH Network participated in this event and became the main actors in the CSS XII preparation, discussion, agenda setting and event promotion.
The main agendas of CSS XXI are to support the achievement of access to safe sanitation, strengthen the implementation of District/City Sanitation Strategies, and a series of discussion sessions with panellists are from six ministries, including the National Development Agency, Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Environment and Forestry, and events on the Declaration of Commitment to Stop Open Defecation in West Java Province.

The Women Federation from Yogyakarta represented VCA as panellists in a session entitled Building Partnership in Sanitation, where they voiced climate action on the two main agendas of CSS XII.
- Sharing session between development partners conducted by Ambar Widjajanti, Chair of the Women Federation Gedongkiwo, Yogyakarta, by voicing and introducing the role of the Women’s Federation in just climate actions at the local level.
- Promote and build VCA partnerships at CSS XXI Fairs. This exhibition is also a medium for introducing and expanding the VCA program and Women Federation action with the theme of locally-led climate solutions to address sanitation problems and the impact of climate change in local communities through the use of Eco Bags from recycled materials, Eco Enzyme from reduced organic waste, plant pots from inorganic waste, and a number of information media such as leaflets, brochures, and videos.

- Building sanitation is building a prosperous civilisation. Access to safe water and sanitation and a clean and healthy environment are basic human needs that should be met for all.
- Meaningful involvement of marginalised communities as groups of people most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, including women, children and those with disabilities, in achieving safe sanitation for all.
- Communities are the main actors in the provision of safe sanitation.
