‘The talking tree sculpture’
NewZambian Innovations is proud to share the ongoing success of "The Talking Tree Sculpture," an innovative project under the Hivos-supported Voices for Climate Action (VCA) Kulenga Chilengedwe Artists' Network on Climate Change.
Kulenga Chilengedwe is derived from the Chewa language, where kulenga means to make or draw while chilengedwe means creation. Alexis Phiri spearheads the initiative from Kachere Art Studio. Alexis & Kachere art studio is renowned for the celebrated Rhino sculpture created from recycled waste collected from across Lusaka and Zambia at Longacres area, which was dubbed Funta Funta art. Although the Rhino was sadly razzed and vandalized due to road expansion works, the community’s passion for environmental art remains strong.
With the support of the VCA grant, “The Talking Tree Sculpture” has seen significant progress. However, the sculpture is still a work in progress. The project is part of a larger artistic endeavor that includes a theatrical performance titled “Kowela” by the popular Zambian artist Moses Sakala, and a comic book created by artists such as Kiss Abraham, Ng’andwe Mwaba, and Clement Nami.

The tree sculpture has already garnered enthusiastic support from the community. Journalist, Environmentalist & Farmer Heather Bender Chalcraft has generously donated various reclaimed metal pieces from her Pebblebrook Farm in State Lodge Chalimbana and Rockston art studio is at hand for consultation. Additionally, skilled sculptors Rabson Phiri and Jersat Mbewe, both from Linda Township and trained under the late industrious Friday Tembo at Ulendo Studio are contributing their expertise to the project.
Ng’andwe Mwaba has also partnered with Kachere art studio to develop the installation. Raw materials are being scavanged and sourced from Lusaka’s Kanyama Township and the industrial area.
The ongoing efforts of the artists and community members are steadily bringing “The Talking Tree Sculpture” to life. This evolving masterpiece stands as a testament to creativity, collaboration, and the collective commitment to raising awareness about climate change & the environment.
As “The Talking Tree Sculpture” continues to take shape, NewZambian Innovations remains dedicated to fostering sustainable artistic expressions that inspire positive environmental action. Meanwhile, the anticipation surrounding the completion of this unique installation grows, promising to leave a lasting impact on the Lusaka community and beyond.
