The October Declaration: A Joint Initiative to Anticipate for the Impacts of Climate Change

Joint discussions concerning El Nino and efforts towards climate resilience were conducted by the C4Legder Consortium, one of the VCA Indonesia alliances. The October Declaration, an agreement and work commitment, was the outcome of the discussions that occurred from the 4th to the 5th of October.

A collaborative commitment between parties on climate mitigation and adaptation in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province was sought to acquire an overview of El Nino and its impact on NTT Province due to climate change as perceived by various parties.

Policy, institutions, and the community are the three domains where a collective commitment has been reached after two days of discussion.  Concerning policy and institutional dimensions, this entails the consensus to endorse long-term regional development strategies and the operation of reciprocal coordination to bolster forthcoming endeavours concerning climate change. In the interim, the community’s views generated recommendations for developing message content, including pamphlets and other materials suitable for widespread distribution.

This collaborative effort has the potential to enhance community comprehension and raise awareness regarding the pervasive consequences of climate change. About the consequences of El Nino, it is particularly anticipated that all parties will be able to foresee their own actions based on the outcomes of this declaration.

On Thursday, May 10, 2023, at the Neo Aston Hotel Kupang, all stakeholders representing the NTT Provincial Government regional administrative organisations (OPDs), non-governmental organisations (NGOs), community members, academics, and media signed the declaration.
