Pantanal: “The water factory is running out of water”
WWF Bolivia
The Bolivian Pantanal is a natural jewel, a veritable “water factory” that sustains the lives of countless species and communities. However, its importance remains poorly understood, and its future is increasingly uncertain.
The lack of clear and accessible information has led managers, authorities and society to pay insufficient attention to the fragility of this ecosystem. Aware of this reality, Doly Leytón and the scientific-technical team (photographers, illustrators, animation, journalists and web development) of La Región decided to act through the Next Level Grant Facility – NLGF and its opportunities fund in Bolivia.
Through the initiative “Pantanal: The water factory runs out of water”, they undertook an ambitious campaign to make visible the vulnerability of the Bolivian Pantanal. They set out to generate multimedia content with accurate and simple information that would inform and inspire people to act. They knew that to protect the Pantanal, it was necessary for everyone – governments, communities and citizens – to understand its crucial role in the generation of fresh water and the environmental balance of the country.
The massive dissemination of this content on digital platforms and traditional media achieved an unprecedented impact. More than 1.5 million people were reached through Meta, while interviews in media such as Red Erbol, with a reach of 800 thousand listeners nationwide, took the message even further. The campaign not only raised awareness but also promoted sustainable tourism and the active participation of communities in the protection of the Pantanal.
The results speak for themselves. This campaign also won second place for the nature report of the year 2024, organised by the NGO Conservation International. Thanks to this initiative, more people understood the urgency of preserving the Pantanal and conservation policies were strengthened. The Pantanal water factory still faces challenges, but today, more than ever, it has a society that is more informed and committed to its protection.
