For years, the residents of Madoya faced unimaginable hardship in accessing life’s most basic necessity, water. With no reliable local source, residents had to walk two Kilometres to Kiamaiko to buy water at Ksh 20 per jerrycan, often queuing for hours. The journey home was equally strenuous, with families forced to pay Ksh 50 for mkokoteni transport. Even after all this effort, the water was not always clean, and typhoid infections were common.
Sanitation was an even greater challenge. With no proper sewer system, makeshift solutions like flying toilets became the norm, posing serious health risks. The lack of infrastructure exacerbated poverty levels, fueled crime, and limited access to education. In Madoya, survival itself was an uphill battle.
Determined to break free from these cycles, the Madoya Tumaini group took action. Through the Next Level Grant Facility, they installed two large water tanks, transforming access to clean, affordable water. What once cost Ksh. 20 per jerrycan was now available for just Ksh. 5, instantly relieving financial pressure on families and improving health outcomes.
But Madoya Tumaini did not stop there. Recognising that access to clean water alone was not enough, they introduced free, accessible toilets. For the first time, residents could use safe sanitation facilities without worrying about cost or availability. This simple yet powerful change dramatically improved hygiene, reduced disease outbreaks, and restored dignity to the community.
Beyond meeting immediate needs, Madoya Tumaini embraced sustainability. By selling water to residents at an affordable price, the group generated income to maintain infrastructure and invest in additional projects. Their urban farming initiative flourished, providing families with fresh vegetables and creating new economic opportunities.
Perhaps the most profound transformation has been the sense of unity and empowerment within the community. Crime rates have dropped as more residents find opportunities to engage in productive activities.
