Eco Bag Day Campaign in Jakarta, Indonesia

In the vibrant months of November and December 2024, the Women Federation Jakarta (WFJ) made a remarkable impact by spearheading collaborative initiatives aimed at reducing single-use plastic. With the support of the Women Federation Penjaringan (WFPJ) and the Women Federation Sukapura (WFSK), they brought eco-consciousness to life in three traditional markets in Penjaringan Sub-District and three in Cilincing Sub-District, North Jakarta City, Indonesia.

The heart of their mission was market education, which unfolded through dynamic explorations, engaging both traders and visitors. This initiative didn’t just stop at spreading awareness; it stood as a partnership with the Environmental Agency for North Jakarta, local government bodies, and the Family Welfare Organization (FWO). Together, they tackled the pressing issues of climate change while promoting the benefits of using Eco Bags.

But the Women’s Federation didn’t stop there. They embarked on an advocacy journey, fostering collaboration that ensures the sustainability of their efforts. Their commitment to reducing plastic waste culminated in a powerful Declaration on Reducing Single-Use Plastic Waste and Embracing Eco Bags in Traditional Markets. This significant agreement was endorsed by key stakeholders, including the Deputy Sub-district Head and heads of local governments, highlighting a strong collective resolve to combat plastic pollution.

To implement their plans, the Women’s Federation created 220 unique Eco Bags, crafted from recycled banners. These eco-friendly bags are now distributed through recycling container dropbox installations, a collaborative effort with market administrators, reinforcing their campaign’s reach.
Thanks to this united movement, the local government and community are wholeheartedly committed to promoting Eco Bags in traditional markets. The results are inspiring: visitors and traders are not only embracing the change but are actively choosing recycled containers like Eco Bags and thin wall alternatives over single-use plastics. Together, they are transforming their market practices and paving the way for a greener future!
