By Asida, Jessica - SPEAK Indonesia

On August 1, 2024, at Yogyakarta Province Governor's Office, Kepatihan, the Special Region of Yogyakarta Provincial Government, initiated a climate action campaign to strengthen the Zero Waste Movement in dealing with the waste emergency in Yogyakarta.

This campaign, the theme of which was “Protect the Golden Generation from Waste Disasters”, was organised in collaboration with VCA-SPEAK Indonesia, Women Federation Yogyakarta (WFY), Pena Bulu Foundation, Mama4Planet, Education Agency of Yogyakarta Province (EAYP), Health Agency of Yogyakarta Province (HAYP), and Province Special Regional of Yogyakarta Agency for Environmental and Forestry Affairs (PYAEFA) to commemorate National Children’s Day.

The pile-up of solid waste threatens the health and comfort of children, as seen at the Senior High School of Nine Yogyakarta, located next to a Solid Waste Disposal. In addition, solid waste is starting to pollute rivers in DI Yogyakarta Province, one of which is in the Gedongkiwo area. The target areas for Kelurahan coverage that are of joint concern include Kelurahan Gedongkiwo, Kalurahan Sinduadi, Kalurahan Sardonoharjo, Kalurahan Sinduharjo, and Kelurahan Terban.
