Amplifying Community Voices in Kenya
In Kenya’s Narok, Nakuru, Lamu, and Marsabit Counties, communities are not just responding to climate change, they’re shaping the solutions. Through the Voices for Just Climate Action (VCA) program, local institutions and marginalised groups have been empowered to lead climate adaptation efforts that reflect their lived realities and priorities.
A newly released video, Community Voices for Local Climate Solutions, captures the transformative impact of the VCA program. It tells the story of how Ward Climate Change Planning Committees (WCCPCs), supported by the Adaptation Consortium and partners, have become central to participatory decision-making and climate finance allocation. These committees, composed of community members including women, youth, Indigenous peoples, and persons with disabilities, are now shaping climate projects that are locally led, inclusive, and sustainable.
The video also highlights the collaborative efforts between civil society organizations, county governments, and grassroots actors. This partnership model has proven essential in building capacity, amplifying community voices, and ensuring that climate finance mechanisms are responsive to local needs.
While the video is a powerful storytelling tool, its true impact lies in its potential to inspire replication and scale. It serves as a call to action for governments, donors, and development partners to invest in locally led climate solutions and to recognize the value of community-driven processes in achieving climate justice.
As the VCA program continues to evolve, the stories from these communities remind us that climate resilience is not just about infrastructure or policy, it’s about people. And when those people are given the platform to lead, the results are transformative.
