Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA) is a feminist – Pan-African civil society organization founded in 1985 by a group of African woman living in the diaspora, who remained keenly aware of their African roots and the need to organize autonomously. we were named Akina Mama wa Afrika which means solidarity amount African women.

Hivos was founded in 1968, inspired by humanist values. Our founders held the conviction that development work should be secular, as true cooperation presumes respect for different beliefs. In our first ever brochure , our founders wrote that “necessary changes should sprint from communities themselves – from people at the base of society” These convictions are still reflected in our work.
