KOPI Coalition: Driving Youth-Led Climate Action

Jezzania Verlyn Christy - Perupadata

Since its establishment in 2020, Koalisi Orang Muda untuk Perubahan Iklim (KOPI) has emerged as a powerful platform for youth-led climate action in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). Initiated by Hutan Itu Indonesia and Terasmitra with the support of HIVOS through the Voices for Just Climate Action (VCA) programme, KOPI brings together youth communities and organisations to strengthen collective action. With a vision to shape 100 young climate leaders by 2025, KOPI has been instrumental in placing youth at the heart of the climate justice movement in the region.

To date, KOPI has united over 120 youth organisations across 12 regions in NTT, ranging from Manggarai to Alor and Kupang. Through campaigns, education sessions, and collaborative projects, the coalition aims to engage 56,000 youth and implement 1,000 climate-related initiatives by 2028. One of its flagship programmes is the Jambore Gotong Royong untuk Flobamoratas (GRUF), a youth gathering rooted in solidarity and shared commitment to climate justice. The latest jamboree, held in Alor under the theme Taramiti Tominuku (“Different homes, one heart”), welcomed hundreds of youths for climate talks, skill-building workshops, and the launch of a youth-led climate manifesto.

Beyond GRUF, KOPI continues to inspire local movements through the Anak Muda NTT Baku Dukung campaign, empowering over 500 youth in 82 grassroots initiatives like mangrove planting, beach cleanups, and public discussions. The 2022 Flobamoratas Festival further amplified their impact by showcasing climate action in a vibrant concert and exhibition attended by over 2,000 people.

KOPI also fosters continuous learning through its dedicated learning centre, which has conducted 14 sessions on youth roles, climate literacy, and localised action strategies to date. More than just a coalition, KOPI represents a growing force of young changemakers who bring local voices to the national stage—turning concern into action and action into hope.

Together, they remind us that the path to climate justice must include young people’s passion, creativity, and leadership. And in East Nusa Tenggara, that movement is already well underway.
