Khawla Hwiji: Dar Fatma

Hivos

Khawla Hwiji is a young filmmaker whose passion for art and advocacy has led her to become one of the promising outcomes of the Voices for Just Climate Action (VCA) programme. Her journey began with the Ecologic'CAP project, implemented by Collectif Creatif within the VCA framework, where her dream to document the environmental challenges faced by local communities began to take shape.

Living near a wetland, Khawla found inspiration in the farming and water issues around her, sparking the idea for her first short documentary. In 2023, her debut film, “Vision Floue,” which explored these pressing challenges, won the Human Rights Award at the FIFAK festival in Tunisia, a remarkable achievement for a young filmmaker. This recognition opened doors for her, and she was selected to present her work at the prestigious Landscape World Forum in Nairobi in October 2023, where she exchanged ideas with other activists passionate about environmental justice.

Khawla’s ambitions didn’t stop there. She continued to pursue her passion, receiving support to work on her second short documentary, “Dar Fatma,” which focuses on the endangered “Tourbière Dar Fatma” ecosystem in Ain Drahem, North West Tunisia. With a deep commitment to climate justice, Khawla’s art serves as a powerful tool for raising awareness about environmental issues. Balancing her studies and filmmaking, Khawla is on a path to becoming a well-known advocate for climate justice, using her artistic talent to shine a light on the critical ecological challenges facing her country.

Her journey, from a small dream to significant recognition, is an inspiring story of hard work, dedication, and the power of art in advocacy
